Selection Process
Applications for Recruit Firefighter are now open for a written test to be conducted in June 2012. Applications will close on 1 June 2012.
Applicants that that sat the August 2011 test and were unsuccessful are eligible to apply for the June 2012 test.
It should also be noted that from 2012 onwards, ACER will only be conducting one written test per year for the MFB. The next test is scheduled to be conducted in June 2012
The Recruit Firefighter selection process involves a number of stages designed to determine an applicant’s suitability to meet the requirements of the role of Recruit Firefighter. Please ensure you carefully read through each of these selection stages, located on the left of screen, before submitting your application.
It is vital that applicants understand all stages of the recruit selection process and comply with the minimum entry requirements and MFB’s Driving and Prior Offences Policies before submitting an application.
Applicants must be eligible and comply with the minimum entry and Driving and Prior Offences policies on the day their application is lodged.
2009 Selection Process Changes
The MFB has made some significant changes to the way applicant’s progress through the selection process.
These changes relate specifically to the three attempts policy and will be effective from the first Written Selection Test scheduled for February 2009.
All applicants, regardless of how many times they have previously applied will have their application counted as their first application under the new three attempts policy. From 2009, all applicants will be required to submit an application and register to attend the Written Selection Test to commence their application.
New three attempts policy
Applicants will be allowed a maximum of three (3) attempts/invitations at each stage of the selection process.
Applicants will no longer be required to reapply if they are successful at any of the following stages.
- Written Selection Test (maximum of three attempts)
- Unsuccessful applicants are required to wait for a period of no less than 12 months, prior to
resubmitting an application online to attend the Written Selection Test. .
- Three failed attempts at this stage will result in an applicant being unable to re-apply.
- A pass at this stage enables an applicant to progress to the Group Assessment.
- Group Assessment (maximum of three attempts / invitations)
- Unsuccessful applicants are required to wait for a period of no less than 3 months, prior to being invited to re-attempt this stage (the timing of this invitation will be determined by the MFB and based on MFB needs).
- Three failed attempts at this stage will result in an applicant being unable to re-apply.
- A pass at this stage enables an applicant to progress to the Pre-employment Medical.
- Pre-employment Medical (A pre-employment Medical is required).
- A subsequent pre-employment medical may be required depending on the time elapsed since the initial pre-employment medical.
- An applicant who is deemed fit by the Brigade Medical Officer will progress to the physical stages of the selection process
- Physical Fitness (Shuttle Run) (maximum of three attempts / invitations at this stage)
- Unsuccessful applicants are required to wait for a period of no less than 3 months, prior to being invited to re-attempt this stage (the timing of this invitation will be determined by the MFB and based on MFB needs).
- three failed attempts at this stage will result in an applicant being unable to re-apply
- A pass at this stage enables an applicant to progress to the physical aptitude test.
- Physical Aptitude Test (maximum of 3 attempts / invitations at this stage)
- Unsuccessful applicants are required to wait for a period of no less than 3 months, prior to being invited to re-attempt this stage (the timing of this invitation will be determined by the MFB and based on MFB needs).
- Three failed attempts at this stage will result in an applicant being unable to re-apply.
- A pass at this stage enables an applicant to progress to the psychological profile questionnaire.
- Psychological Profile Questionnaire
- Applicants who the test identifies to be providing an unacceptable level of “fake good” responses will be excluded from progressing to the selection interview and may not attempt the psychological profile for another 12 months.
- Please note that it is very important that you read each question carefully. Failing to do this will mean that your profile results cannot be interpreted accurately. Applicants who are extremely careless in responding will also be excluded from progressing to the selection interview and from attempting the psychological profile for 12 months.
- A pass at this stage enables an applicant to progress to the Selection Interview
- Selection Interview (maximum of three attempts / invitations at this stage)
- Unsuccessful applicants are required to wait for a period of no less than three months, prior to being invited to re-attempt this stage (the timing of this invitation will be determined by the MFB and based on MFB needs).
- Three failed attempts at this stage will result in an applicant being unable to re-apply.
- An applicant deemed suitable following interview will be placed on an order of merit from which future offers of employment may be made.
These changes are considered to be a fairer system and reduce the cost and time impact on applicants.
It also ensures that applicants do not have to repeat a particular stage if they have already achieved the required standard for that stage.
