Two elderly people escaped uninjured from a Richmond house fire earlier today after they were alerted by the activation of smoke alarm.

Aggressive firefighting tactics contained the fire to a bedroom at the rear of the single storey brick house. The cause of the fire has been deemed to be of an electrical nature.

Both the room and the contents have been severely damaged by fire while a portion of the remainder of the house has suffered slight smoke damage.

Ambulance Victoria attended to assess the elderly couple as a precaution.

Approximately 18 firefighters attend the fire.
