A woman has been taken to hospital following a fire which broke out at a Chinese Restaurant in Prahran this afternoon.

MFB firefighters rushed to the premises in Malvern Road just before 2.30pm after passers-by spotted flames and smoke billowing from the building.

Crews evacuated five people from inside the restaurant and managed to extinguish the blaze within minutes.

They then checked the roof space to make sure the fire hadn’t spread.

Ambulance Victoria transported one woman to hospital with injuries.

It’s believed the fire began in the kitchen.

The incident caused minor smoke damage to the building.

MFB Commander Tony McCoy praised the quick actions of firefighters.

“Crews deployed to the scene very quickly and got the fire contained to the kitchen and extinguished in a short period of time,” he said.
