A single storey weather board house in Ringwood was severely damaged by fire, early on Monday morning.

Fire crews arrived at the Ringwood Street property about 1.20am to find the fire well alight.

Initial fire fighting efforts were hampered by poor accessibility to the premises as the house was vacant with the yard heavily overgrown.

The fire was brought under control at 01:59.

The fire has been deemed to be suspicious and police are investigating further.  The value of the loss has not yet been estimated.

Nine appliances and 26 firefighters attended the incident.
