Firefighters worked to contain a large fire in a Sunshine North scrap metal yard this morning.

Crews were called to the incident just after 9am.

Large plumes of smoke were visible across the western suburbs of Melbourne.

The fire was in a scrap metal yard some 300 meters across fuelled by old tyres and automotive parts.

Eight appliances, with 27 firefighters, from various fire stations were on scene quickly and kept the fire contained to the yard.

There quick response prevented it from spreading to neighbouring properties

MFB issued a community safety warning advising of the smoke in the area and urged people to contact Nurse on Call if they felt affected by the smoke.

The fire was brought under control in 45 minutes.  EPA and Worksafe will be investigating the scene.
