A vacant house in Lalor has been damaged after a fire broke out on Friday night.

MFB firefighters were called to the residence on Mount View Road at 9:15pm after a pile of rubbish caught fire and spread to the house.

Crews arrived in minutes to find that the fire had made its way into the roof space but were able to prevent it from overtaking the rest of the property.

Approximately 20 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control in less than an hour.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.

CFA firefighters also assisted at the scene.
