Suspicious circumstances surround an early morning blaze that caused extensive damage to a house in Brighton East.

The fire in the vacant weatherboard house on Barr Street was reported just after 2.30am with MFB crews arriving on scene less than five minutes later.

Concerns were raised that squatters may be trapped inside and a search was conducted as soon as it was safe to do so.

Fortunately there was no one found inside but the fire had destroyed most of the dwelling and the roof.

Extra precautions were taken due to the presence of asbestos but firefighters still managed to bring the blaze under control in 15 minutes.

The damage bill has been estimated at $600,000.

Seven appliances with 21 firefighters attended the fire.
