Firefighters were called to a unit on Princes St at 9:34am this morning following reports of black smoke issuing from an apartment block.

MFB crews were on scene in less than three minutes and arrived to find a 10 by 10 metre unit on the first floor fully alight.

Firefighters in Breathing Apparatus conducted an internal aggressive attack, bringing the blaze under control in 12 minutes and containing it to the unit.

Ambulance Victoria treated one male occupant on scene for smoke inhalation before he was transported to hospital.

Occupants of the building's other units were evacuated safely.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
