back to list
07 Dec 2018
MFB firefighters were called to a truck which caught fire in the Burnley Tunnel near Southbank at 9:29am.

Thankfully, the tunnel’s inbuilt deluge systems were activated which ensured the fire was contained swiftly. The single occupant evacuated the truck safely and there were no reports of injury.

A number of calls to triple zero reported that the engine area of the truck was fully alight. Once on scene, MFB crews made access to the truck and ensured the blaze was brought under control by 9:48am.

There is currently disruption to traffic in the tunnel, and approximately 20 firefighters are working to remove the truck from the tunnel so that traffic flow can resume. The community are asked to avoid the area and ensure the roads are kept clear for emergency services.

At this stage it is not known what caused the fire.

At the peak of the fire there were four MFB appliances and one Commander unit on scene.
