A fire has caused significant damage to two properties in Caulfield East late this afternoon.

More than 30 firefighters responded to the two storey townhouse on Dudley Street just after 4:30pm following a number of Triple Zero (000) calls.

Firefighters donned in breathing apparatus entered the premises and found that the fire had extended into the adjoining unit and the roof space.

Crews were able to stop the fire from over taking the rest of the property and the incident was deemed under control in 50 minutes.

Approximately 30 people were evacuated from a near by building as a precaution.

It is not know what stated the blaze and MFB’s specialist Fire Investigators will attend to determine a cause.

At the height of the fire there were nine MFB appliances at the scene including a Command unit.
