A family of five had a lucky escape from a fire in Keilor Downs thanks to a quick-thinking teenager.

The occupants were home when the fire broke out in the garage of their Marriot Road house about 6.30pm last night.

A teenage girl who had undergone MFB's Fire Education Program, put her learnings into action by alerting her family, evacuating them to safety and calling Triple Zero (000).

The incident Controller, Commander Steve Watts, praised the girl's actions.

Firefighters mounted an aggressive attack on the fire, preventing it from spreading. It was under control within 30 minutes.

MFB Fire Investigators will investigate the cause of the incident.
