13 Feb 2019
Firefighters have contained a suspicious fire in Hampton East to the bedroom where it is believed it started.

Crews were called to the ground floor unit on Wickham Road at around 5:10am and arrived on scene just five minutes later.

Three residents of the double storey building had evacuated before firefighters arrived on scene, however the building was heavily smoke logged.

Wearing breathing apparatus, crews entered the building in a bid to search for any residents remaining in neighbouring units.

One occupant suffering smoke inhalation was treated by Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

Firefighters managed to ensure the fire was contained to a bedroom of the ground floor unit.

Their efforts meant the blaze was brought under control in just 20 minutes.

At the height of the fire there were five firefighting appliances at the scene being directed by one Commander.

Firefighters deemed the fire suspicious and the scene has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.
