A suspicious fire has destroyed a former primary school and threatened homes in Clayton this afternoon.

MFB firefighters were called to the abandoned building in Browns Road about 2.15pm.
They arrived to find the school building well alight, with flames jumping across to the nearby school oval, which was covered in long grass.
Crews worked quickly to stop the spread of the blaze and protect neighbouring houses.
There was evidence that squatters had been living at the property but luckily a search revealed that no one was inside at the time.
Firefighters managed to get the incident under control within half an hour.
The fire is being treated as suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate.
