Suspicious fire at vacant Flemington racecourse hotel.

07 Jun 2012
The former Racecourse Hotel located on the corner of Ascot Vale Rd and Epson Rd in Flemington has again gone up in flames as fire raced through the vacant two storey structure.

The building, though boarded up and scarred from previous fires, is a known haunt for squatters.

Firefighting crews had to avoid live tramway wires that were brought down when supporting guide wires melted in the intense heat from the blaze.

Firefighters took almost an hour to bring the fire under control.  Most of the roof has collapsed and a council building surveyor will attend in the morning to assess the structural integrity of the brick walls.

The cause has been deemed suspicious and Police have been advised.  As the building is earmarked for demolition and/or total renovation, no financial estimate has been allocated for the damage.
