16 May 2020
More than 20 firefighters were called to Black Street in Brighton, following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) just after 2am on Saturday morning.

Crews arrived on scene within minutes, and were met with flames and smoke issuing from a double storey building that was under construction.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters conducted a search of the property and confirmed no one was inside at the time of the fire.

Firefighters worked to contain the fire and ensure it did not spread to neighbouring properties.

Crews managed to bring the blaze under control less than one hour after crews arrived on scene.

MFB used thermal imaging cameras to identify and extinguishing remaining hot spots and remained on scene into the morning.

Firefighters believe the incident may have started under suspicious circumstances, and the scene has been handed to Victoria Police for further investigation.

There was a lot of smoke in Brighton as a result of the incident, and MFB issued a community advice message.

At the height of the incident there were 10 MFB appliances at the scene, including five pumpers, an aerial appliance and a rescue unit, and three other units.
