Almost 30 firefighters have fought a blaze which took hold of a two storey house in Keilor Downs this morning.

MFB was called to Packard Street after multiple community members called Triple Zero (000) just after 6:30am.

Initial crews arrived on scene in less than five minutes and were met with flames issuing through the roof of the house which was fully alight.

The house was reportedly occupied by squatters, and boarded up windows made access to the building difficult.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus made access and began an internal search of the property and thankfully confirmed no one was inside.

They began an internal attack on the blaze, but were withdrawn for their safety after the floor of the second storey began to collapse.

Aggressive external firefighting continued via an aerial appliance, and crews managed to get the fire under control by 7:24am – less than an hour after the first call to Triple Zero (000).

Firefighters believe the blaze began under suspicious circumstances, and will hand the scene over to Victoria Police for further investigation.

Crews are expected to remain on scene for some time as they work to completely extinguish the fire and make the scene safe.
