More than 30 firefighters responded to Sunshine North following reports of a large facility which was believed to be storing gas canisters and chemicals.

Initial crews arrived to the Spalding Avenue address just before 6:30pm and were met with a fire which had taken hold of materials being stored outside of the building.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus for protection began to attack the fire in a bid to stop it from spreading into the interior of the building.

Their efforts ensured the fire was brought under control in a little over 15 minutes after the first call to Triple Zero (000).

There is a lot of smoke in the area, and MFB has issued an advice message for community nearby.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene for some time.

At this stage it is not clear what caused the blaze to begin however analysis will take place once the scene has been made safe.

At the height of the fire there were seven firefighting appliances on scene, in addition to five support and control units.

Ambulance Victoria Paramedics are on scene to ensure the health of responding crews.
