South Melbourne restaurant damaged in early morning fire

More than 30 firefighters were called to Coventry Street in South Melbourne after a restaurant caught fire early on Monday morning.

Multiple callers to Triple Zero (000) advised there was smoke and flames coming from the back of a shop just before 5:00am.

Firefighters arrived on scene in six minutes before calling for additional crews to attend.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus attacked the fire and brought it under control after 25 minutes.

MFB firefighters believe the fire started under suspicious circumstances and the scene has been handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.
