Working smoke alarms save lives, as proven by a fire this morning.

An operating smoke alarm provided sufficient warning for an elederly man and his wife to safely evacuate from their burning home in Bass Street, Box Hill this morning.

On hearing the alarm sounding, the wife investigated and found her husband asleep and the bed on fire.

Senior Station Officer Phil Griffith, who was part of the MFB response of three fire trucks and 10 firefighters, said, “The working smoke alarm saved his life”.

The fire, which started in an electric blanket, has caused significant damage to the home and has extended into the roof space. The occupants have been forced to source alternative accommodation.

MFB firefighters will remain on scene until early afternoon to continue fire duties.
