A family of five were forced to leave their home due to a fire last night.

The fire, in Lyell Avenue Lalor, originated in a garage at the front and spread into the two-storey house which became heavily smoke-logged.

Four fire trucks, including one from CFA, and 20 firefighters were quickly on the scene and contained the fire mostly to the garage.  The working smoke alarm alerted the occupants.

Damage is estimated to be approximately $25,000 and the cause of the fire will be investigated by the MFB Fire Investigation Unit today.

There were no reports of any injuries.
