Smoke alarm alerts elderly couple to Balwyn North house fire

A working smoke alarm has alerted a Balwyn North family to a kitchen fire overnight.

Crews were called to the Severn Street home at 5am.

On arrival firefighters could see fire and flames through the roof and requested additional fire trucks.

Power and gas to the single storey 15m x 20m brick veneer unit were isolated.

Ambulance Victoria responded to the incident and treated an eldery couple affected by the incident.

Firefighters in Breathing Apparatus attacked the fire internally and protected the contents from water damage with tarps.

The fire was declared Under Control after 35 minutes. The kitchen and roof space have suffered extensive damage and the rest of the unit has been damaged by smoke and water.

The cause of the fire appears to be related to the cooktop area, Fire Investigation will be contacted regarding further investigation.

Police were on scene and an ambulance was on scene to monitor firefighters exiting the fire in Breathing Apparatus.
