A man has escaped a Coburg house fire thanks to working smoke alarms.

The man was asleep in the bedroom of the McPherson Street home when a fire broke out about 1.45pm.

He woke up when the smoke alarms in the house activiated, warning him of the emergency and allowing him to safety evacuate.

MFB firefighters arrived on scene to find the house in flames. They worked quickly to contain the blaze to the house and stop it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

Crews managed to get the incident under control within 17 minutes.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
