Safe escape for Derrimut residents after garage fire

Residents of a Derrimut home evacuated safely this morning after a garage fire.

Multiple Triple Zero calls were received for a garage fire at the Capesthorn Driver address just before 7am, with reportedly all occupants evacuating safely.

Fire crews were on scene in four minutes and found a single storey garage, measuring 10 by 15 metres, in front of the house well alight, they confirmed all occupants were accounted for. Additional appliance were also requested and dispatched.

MFB and CFA firefighters in breathing apparatus and with the addition of an aerial appliance (Teleboom) aggressively attacked the fire and contained the fire to the structure involved whilst protecting the house from fire extension. The roof has collapsed on the garage and was severely damaged by fire, minor fire damage to the house was also sustained.

One occupant was treated by Ambulance Victoria.

The fire was under control in 25 minutes.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be unattended clothing that was placed too close to a bar radiator.

The damage bill has been estimated at $100,000.

MFB fire crews will be in attendance for a number of hours this morning.

Police and Ambulance are also on scene.
