Rugby league and cricket clubs devastated by club room blaze

Club rooms at Lofts Reserve in Newport have been severely damaged by a suspicious fire.

The club rooms were used by the the Altona Roosters Rugby League club and also housed the West Newport Cricket Club's history and equipment.

Crews were called to the scene at 5:08pm.

The fire involved a single storey brick clubroom, measuring 25 by 10 metres, with a metal  roof at the Loft Reserve on Maddox Road.

The fire was contained to the central area of the premises 10 by 8 metres.

That area of the building including the contents has been severely damaged by fire while a portion of the remainder of the building has been damaged by heat, smoke and water.

Firefighters had difficulty in gaining access into the heavily secured building, and had the fire under control in 30 minutes. Breathing apparatus was in operation.

The cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious and police are investigating.
