A home has been destroyed in Cairnlea after a fire ripped through the property early Friday evening.

MFB firefighters were called to the single storey house on Weaver Terrace just before 5pm after a person saw smoke issuing from the property.

The first truck arrived in six minutes and crews were met with blaze that was threatening surrounding properties. Firefighters sprung into action and immediately put down hose lines and enlisted an aerial appliance to contain the blaze.

The roof of the home collapsed due to the intensity of the fire. More than 30 firefighters worked in extremely hot conditions and brought the fire under control in just over 30 minutes.

At the height of the fire there were eight firefighting appliances on scene including a rescue and a teleboom unit.

MFB's specialist Fire Investigators will work to determine the cause of the fire.
