Residents evacuated following Murrumbeena fire

Residents of an aged care facility have been evacuated following a fire in Murrumbeena this evening.

MFB firefighters were called to Murrumbeena Road about 6.50pm following Triple Zero (000) calls for a fire in a shop.

The callers raising the alarm alerted firefighters to the fact that an aged care facility was next door.

Crews arrived on scene in less than seven minutes to find a house at the rear of a shop fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters and police evacuated several dozen residents of the care facility as a precautionary measure.

Crews conducted an aggressive attack on the fire and managed to get it under control in less than 15 minutes while protecting the care facility.

The evacuated residents are being returned to their homes safetly.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
