Backpacker Fire Safety Brochure

Welcome to Melbourne.

MFB is the emergency response and community safety organisation for Melbourne and close Metropolitan areas. We are responsible for protecting our communities from fire and other emergencies.

FOR YOUR SAFETY

  • Know Your Room.
  • Prevent Fires.
  • Be Prepared for an Emergency.
  • In a fire Call 000.

Keep Yourself Safe:

  • Plan your escape.

In a Fire

  • Get down on the floor. Crawl to the door.
  • Get out of your room.
  • Close the door. This prevents smoke and fire from spreading.
  • Alert others.
  • When outside stay out.
  • Call 000.

Be Prepared for an Emergency:

Smoke Alarms

  • Your room has a smoke alarm.
  • Test your smoke alarm (only possible if there is a test button).

This sound can save your life. It tells you there is danger from a fire in your room.

Never prevent your smoke alarm from working.

In case of Fire, know:

  • Where your nearest fire exit is.
  • How to use a fire extinguisher or hose reel.
  • Where your evacuation meeting place is.
  • The evacuation plan for your building.

Do not use the lift/elevator except where there is a sign “May be used in an emergency”.

Know Your Room:

You may have to get out in the dark.

Make sure:

  • The door is not blocked.
  • You can find your key easily (in the lock is best).
  • You can open the windows easily to escape.

Prevent Fires:

Remember:

Cigarettes

  • Do not smoke in bed.
  • Dampen cigarettes. Then dispose of them.

Candles and Oil Burners

  • Don’t leave your room when a candle or oil burner is alight.
  • Don’t go to sleep when a candle or oil burner is alight.
  • Be careful, curtains can catch fire easily.

Furniture can be highly flammable.

Oil Burners

  • First put a small amount of water in an oil burner. Then add the oil. This keeps the burner and oil at a safe temperature.

Heaters

  • Read and follow the instructions for your room heater.
  • All clothing and curtains should be at least one metre from the heater.
  • Turn off all heaters before you leave your room or go to bed.

Cooking

  • It is important to prepare food only in cooking areas.
  • Always stay in the room while food is cooking.
  • Turn off the cooking appliance before you leave the room.

Cooking with oil

  • Hot oils and fats catch fire easily.
  • Do not use water to put out an oil fire.
  • Use a dry powder extinguisher, a fire blanket or a saucepan lid.

In a Fire:

CALL 000.
Say “FIRE”.
Wait.

Tell the operator:

  • the name of the Backpackers’ hostel.
  • address of the Backpackers’ hostel.
  • your name.
