Approximately 30 MFB firefighters responded to a garage fire threatening neighbouring properties in Northcote just before 7pm.

Crews arrived within six minutes to find a fire inside a garage, which had spread to a tree in the backyard next door.

Neighbouring residents evacuated as firefighters worked to quickly contain the fire.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection, firefighters attacked the flames from inside the structure to stop the fire from spreading further.

The incident was declared under control at 7:36pm.

Fortunately no one was injured in the incident.

MFB crews will remain on scene for some time to extinguish hot spots in the garage.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are also on scene assisting.

A community warning was issued due to smoke in the area.
