Non working smoke alarm, almost cost lives.

The lack of a working smoke alarm, almost cost the lives of a middle-aged couple in Bulleen early this morning.

Address: Johnston St, Collingwood.

They were forced to climb out a bedroom window to escape their burning home after waking to the faint crackling sounds of the fire. 

With smoke and flames blocking all other exits, they had no alternative but to get out via the window. 

The blaze destroyed approximately half of the single-storey weatherboard dwelling with the remainder being affected by heat and smoke.  

The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control and 2 hours to extinguish.
