MFB and CFA crews have worked together to battle a blaze in Parkdale thought to have been started by a NYE fire not properly extinguished.

Sparks from a large drum, used overnight to help keep party revellers warm as they ushered in the New Year but left alight and unattended when everyone went home, may have been the cause of a blaze that destroyed two garages in Parkdale yesterday.

Firefighters rushed to the Herbert St address just before 9am and quickly set about trying to stop the flames from spreading to houses just a few metres away.

Despite the intense heat, both houses were saved with MFB and CFA crews working hard to protect the properties.

The garages were located side by side with one almost empty but the neighbouring garage contained an old Harley Davidson motorbike.

A council building engineer has attended and confirmed that both garages will need to be demolished.

The fire was brought under control in 15 minutes and the damage bill estimated to be approximately $60,000.

No injuries were reported.
