A mother and daughter have made a fast escape from burning Sunshine home overnight.

Fire crews were called to the house fire on Donald Street just after 8pm.

The pair were were alerted to a fire when their smoke alarms operated and simultaneously heard a loud explosion from the circuit breaker in their home.

They safely evacuated to a neighbour’s house to raise the alarm.

The fire appears to have started in the roof space, penetrating the roof and causing significant fire damage to the top floor of the two storey townhouse.  The remainder of the home has been severely damage by smoke and water.

MFB firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in 25 minutes and stop the spread of fire entering the adjoining townhouse.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by MFB specialist Fire Investigators in the morning. MFB will remain on scene throughout the evening to continue fire duties.
