More than 40 firefighters were called to a fire at a recycling premise on Gilbertson Road in Laverton North at 5:30pm.

Thankfully, all staff inside the building at the time evacuated safely.

Initial responding crews arrived on scene and began investigating.

They located the fire in a processing machine at the factory which was surrounded by baled waste.

Firefighters declared the fire under control approximately 45 minutes after the first call to Triple Zero (000).

Crews on scene are using thermal imaging cameras to monitor the machine and the surrounding area and will remain on scene until they can be sure the fire is completely extinguished.

MFB is being supported at the scene by Ambulance Victoria paramedics who are assessing some of the evacuees and monitoring the health of firefighters.

At the height of the fire there were 11 firefighting appliances on scene including a rescue unit and two aerial units, in addition to five other units.
