Two people were asleep and awoke to an explosion in their home overnight.

Fire crews were called to the Clarke Street home in Northcote just before midnight.

Firefighters were unsure how many people lived in the property and they searched the premises, wearing breathing apparatus, until it was confirmed that no-one was still inside. They had received earlier reports from 000 callers indicating that persons may still be inside the home, however neighbours had alerted the two residents earlier and helped them escape.

The rear of the single storey, three bedroom house, was well involved in fire when MFB firefighters first arrived.

The fire had extended into the roof space.  The remainder of the property has been smoke and water damaged. Fortunately there were no injuries.

Quick action by first arriving crews stopped the spread of fire.  The fire took 30 minutes to bring under control, however crews remained on scene for two hours.

The cause of the fire will be determined in the morning by specialist MFB Fire Investigators.
