Southbank balcony fire extinguished

MFB firefighters have quickly extinguished a fire which broke out on a Southbank balcony this afternoon.

Crews were called to the high rise building on Kavanagh Street, Southbank just before 5pm following numerous calls to Triple Zero (000).

Crews arrived to find flames and thick black smoke coming from a 13th floor balcony.

They entered the apartment and found furniture on fire but managed to quickly extinguish the flames and stop them from spreading.

The incident was under control within 20 minutes.

Several residents self evacuated but have since returned to their apartments.

Approximately 15-20 residents from the affected floor currently remain in the foyer.

Luckily, no one has been injured.

Fire Investigators will attend the scene to determine the cause of the incident.
