Smoke alarms have again proven to be lifesavers with their piercing shrill saving a family from a Ripponlea house fire this morning.
Hearing the alarms sounding about 9:20am, the mother was alerted to a fire in her laundry and was able to get her children and herself safely outside.
The blaze started in the dryer and soon spread to the roof and part of the hallway of her house. MFB crews were on scene in five minutes and brought the fire under control less than half an hour later.
Fire damage was confined to the rear of the property with the remainder heavily smoke-logged and requiring extensive cleaning. A twin adjoining property that shared a common wall was not affected. Due to the operation of the smoke alarm and the quick action of the mother, no-one was hurt. The repair bill has been estimated at up to $30,000.
Approximately 20 firefighters attended the fire.
