The MFB responded to several reports of a noxious chemical smell coming from the Altona North area.
Date: February 7, 2012
Time: 19:34 hours
Call Number: 2624
Address: McArthurs Road Altona North.
As crews tried to track down the source of the smell, more calls were received from suburbs as far away as Keilor.
The pungent odour was eventually traced to a tank depot where site personnel were washing chemicals out of drums.
The cleaning operation was quickly shut down and the smell soon began to dissipate. Air monitoring confirmed the chemicals were non hazardous even though they were highly odorous.
The MFB issued a Community Web Warning that is automatically sent to all media organisations to advise residents in suburbs north of the incident to stay indoors and close external doors, windows and vents.
A final Community Web Warning was issued confirming the incident had been successfully concluded at 21:50 hours.
