A major fire has extensively damaged a science wing at the Yarra Valley Grammar School in Ringwood last night.
Date: 30 January, 2012
Time 19:10 hours
Call Number: 9983
Address: Yarra Valley Grammar School – Kalinda Rd, Ringwood
The fire was reported just after 7pm and took almost 3 hours to bring under control.
An aggressive attack and rapid intervention by both MFB and CFA crews managed to prevent the fire spreading to a nearby library and computer wing.
Firefighting operations were hampered by several issues including a lack of water pressure and access in and around the science block due to the site topography.
Two firefighters were slightly injured whilst fighting the blaze and were treated at the scene by Ambulance paramedics.
The MFB issued Community Warnings on its website to alert local residents to the fire and to advise them of what to do to best protect themselves from the smoke.
The damage bill has been estimated at more than 1 million dollars with the cause still under investigation.
The MFB will have crews remaining at the scene throughout the night to dampen down any hotspots.
The school is expected to be closed on Tuesday and reopen on Wednesday.
Attending Appliances: 20
Number of firefighters: 100 plus
Officer in charge: Assistant Chief Fire Officer Greg Bawden
