Firefighters respond to gas leak in Brighton

MFB firefighters responded to Railway Avenue in Brighton after reports of a gas leak.

Crews were notified via a caller to Triple Zero (000) at 12:39pm, and arrived on scene within seven minutes.

Firefighters are working to disperse the gas to make the area safe, and bring the incident under control.

A number of nearby residents have been evacuated as a precaution.

At the height of the incident there were approximately 30 firefighters on scene.

Four firefighting appliances, in addition to two specialist HAZMAT appliances, as well as command units and other support units have been dispatched at this stage.

This is expected to be a protracted incident, and the community are asked to avoid the area and ensure the roads are kept clear for emergency services.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police are also assisting at the scene.
