A storage shed was destroyed but an adjoining warehouse was saved in an early morning blaze in Collingwood.
The single-storey warehouse was full of various household items including mattresses and furniture but they only suffered slight smoke damage. The storage shed appears to have been used as a drop-off point for the warehouse and was effectively empty.
Firefighters took special precautions including the wearing of breathing apparatus due to the presence of asbestos in the building materials. Roofing iron also had to be removed to ensure the fire had not spread into the warehouse.
The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes and fully extinguished two hours later. The cause has been deemed suspicious and police have been notified. The damage bill has been kept to only a few thousand dollars due to the excellent work of the fire crews.
Approximately 23 firefighters attended the incident.
