Firefighters have battled a house fire in Watsonia overnight.

Crews attended the Black Street home at 10pm after several calls were received for a fire in the rear unit of the property, details from callers included descriptions of flames higher than the roof.

The first arriving crew requested additional support and extra fire trucks were dispatched.

Properties either side of the house were being threatened initially, but good work by MFB crews in breathing apparatus saw these houses unharmed.

The fire was declared under control after 37 minutes, firefighters remained on scene over night to monitor the property.

Police were called for suspicious circumstances and Ambulance Victoria were called to monitor firefighter health signs.
