MFB firefighters have rescued a man from the balcony of his burning apartment in South Yarra overnight.

Crews arrived on scene in Commercial Road about 4.10am to find the apartment in flames, a staircase already destroyed and fire spreading into the roof cavity.

Firefighters quickly rescued the man and had him checked by paramedics as a precaution.

Crews managed to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes.

Commander Richard Grant praised the swift actions of firefighters in stopping the spread of the fire into neighbouring apartments.

The blaze is being treated as suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate.
