A small unit was gutted following an early morning fire in West Footscray.

The blaze in Clarendon Pde started just after 2am when furniture and items of bric-a-brac located on the front porch were set alight.

The male occupant was lucky not to be harmed when he was forced to flee as the fire spread to engulf his entire unit.

MFB crews were quickly on scene and managed to contain the blaze to just the one ground floor unit and saved several others in the complex from damage.

Police have been asked to investigate the cause of the fire, which is suspected to be the result of an arson attack.

The repair bill has been estimated at $50,000.

Five appliances and about 17 firefighters attended the incident.
