Almost 40 firefighters responded to Mitchell Street in Maidstone after black smoke was spotted coming out of the windows of a building just after 6:30pm.

Crews arrived on scene within seven minutes and were met with a fire in the two storey building.

Wearing breathing apparatus for protection from the smoke, they entered the burning building and attacked the blaze in a bid to stop it from spreading.
