MFB fire investigators will travel to Tullamarine this morning to investigate the cause of a fire which ripped through a unit overnight.

Neighbours rasied the alarm after noticing flames burning through the roof about 1am.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the burning building to search for an elderly man who was initially feared to be inside.

Luckily, it was discovered the occupant wasn't inside at the time.

The fire caused substantial damage to the home, however the cause is yet to be determined.
