Lucky escape from fire for Balwyn family

17 Mar 2014
An early morning blaze caused extensive damage to the rear of a clothing store in Whitehorse Road Balwyn.

A passing Police unit chanced upon the fire just after 1:30am and helped evacuate a family living above a neighbouring shop.

Although the clothing store also has a residence above and additional rooms behind, there is no-one currently living there.

Firefighters faced several challenges including asbestos located in the construction materials and the blaze impinging onto the shops either side.

It took crews almost an hour to control the fire with damage confined to three rooms at the rear and the adjoining premises suffering only minor smoke and fire damage.

The repair bill has been estimated at up to $100,000 and the cause has yet to be determined.  There were no injuries reported.
