Two Sunshine West residents have had a lucky escape from their home this morning after a fire took hold.

MFB firefighters were called to the scene on Dalton Street at around 4:30am this morning and found the single storey weatherboard unit fully alight.

A male and female occupant managed to evacuate, but the male sustained burns to his hands and feet.

MFB firefighters administered first aid at the scene, before he was transported to hospital in the care of Ambulance Victoria Paramedics.

At the peak of the blaze, seven MFB fire appliances and approximately 26 firefighters were working to douse the flames. It took crews 50 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The unit has been severely damaged despite the best efforts of crews, and a part of the ceiling has collapsed. The occupants have sought an alternative place to stay.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for some time to monitor the fire.

At this stage the cause of the blaze is not yet known. MFB specialist Fire Investigation unit are at the scene to determine what sparked the blaze.
