A woman in her nineties is and another occupant safely evacuated a home on Federation Street in Ascot Vale after a lemon tree in the backyard caught fire and quickly spread to a shed.

Firefighters arrived on scene just before 7pm after several calls to Triple Zero (000) and were met with a fire that had engulfed a 5 x 5 metre shed at the property.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus quickly set about extinguishing the fire and stopping it from spreading to adjoining properties.

Their efforts ensured the fire was brought under control within 40 minutes.

More than 25 firefighters, six pumper appliances and one rescue unit were responded to the incident.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are also on scene.

UPDATE: The fire was not suspicious, and is believed to have been caused by a solid BBQ fuel outside the shed.
