MFB firefighters are on scene at Laverton North, where a fire has broken out in a recycling facility.

Crews were called to the premises at Little Boundary Road about 4.15pm and arrived to find a fire threatening to engulf a large pile of paper and cardboard up to four metres high.

Firefighters worked swiftly to get the fire under control in 30 minutes, however, it's expected crews will remain on scene for some time.

A community advice message has been issued warning community members to stay clear of the area and remain indoors if required.

Several streets in the surrounding areas have been closed.
