Firefighters have worked through the night to extinguish a large house fire in Nimmo Street, Essendon.

Community members raised the alarm via Triple Zero (000) after hearing explosions and seeing embers drifting towards nearby properties.

Crews arrived on scene just after 10pm to find the entire home engulfed in flames which were fuelled by the wind and threatening a neighbouring property.

Firefighters mounted an agressive attack on the blaze and managed to save the neighbouring home.

It took 40 minutes to bring the fire under control but crews remained on scene throughout the night to ensure the fire did not reignite.

The house was destroyed. Luckily no one was home at the time.

At this stage, the fire is being treated as suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate.
