Morning fire in Port Melbourne leads to evacuations

About 80 MFB firefighters were required to bring a large fire under control in Port Melbourne this morning.

Early morning diners were forced to flee the coffee shop on the corner of Bay Street and Liardet Street as fire quickly engulfed the premises.

The fire, which started at 6.50am, also led to the evacuation of a large number of residents from adjoining buildings.

The 20m by 50m multi-use building has sustained extensive damage with the damage bill expected to exceed $2 million.

Twenty fire trucks were on scene at the height of the fire, which took just over an hour to control.

An investigation this morning will occur to determine the cause of the fire.
